Relay For Life

What an amazing event.  If you are unfamiliar with Relay For Life, it is a fundraising event put on by The American Cancer Society.  Participants form teams, for which they raise money, and then all come together to walk in honor of those currently fighting, have fought and lost, or have survived cancer.  I believe every single person is somehow affected by the illness, so the sense of community is overwhelmingly positive. Team members are responsible for having at least 1 person walk the track each hour for 12 hours (5 PM – 6 AM).  At the same time there is music, games, a silent auction, etc.   Click on the logo above to learn more about it.

As I mentioned yesterday, my boss, Joe, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.  Two of my colleagues put together a team in his honor.  Yesterday was the actual relay, so we all came together to walk for 12 hours.  I walked the first shift from 5 – 6 PM, but then had to leave soon after.  It was about 105 degrees outside and making me nauseous! At least they didn’t cancel it as they had to do in some cities, but still, that can’t be good for anyone, especially those that are sick, to be out in that heat.  We also had another huge storm last night around 9 PM, so I can’t imagine it continued on.  All in all, it was a great and moving time.

There were supporters of all ages

Have you ever done Relay For Life?  How has cancer affected you/your loved ones?

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was about 5 years old.  I don’t remember it much.  There was no chemo or radiation involved thank goodness.  She has been in remission for over 20 years now!
